I must have been a mermaid in a past life. The ocean has always called to me, beckoning me with her infinite dazzling mysteries, and offering me her womanly wisdom. As a child I was entranced with sharks especially, how beautiful and misunderstood they were. Whenever I found myself near water, I would pretend I was an explorer discovering a new creature, or that I was a young otter splashing around, and I would dance the hours away in the sunshine. Water was my happy place as a child.

My favourite animal has always been the majestic great white shark. I always found their beauty and mystery so captivating. My very first dream was to swim with these ancient and awe-inspiring beings. I would often fall asleep imagining what it would be like to be alongside them.

My other dream was to become a professional singer. These two dreams, of swimming with sharks and of performing on a stage were always pulling at my heart. I ended up getting really into my musical studies and my love for water and sharks slipped into a background whisper. Through lots of hard work and dedication, I fulfilled this dream. I started doing sailing races in the Boston harbor and crewing on different boats. I sang in opera houses in Austria, all over the U.S., and eventually moved to Montreal to perform in more musical theatre-type shows, such as Hair and The Rocky Horror Picture Show as Riff Raff.

My time in Montreal is very special to me, because that’s where Alex and I met and fell in love (all in the same day!) When Alex and I first met, everything clicked into place. Our first date felt like I was talking to someone that I had known for several lifetimes, like we were just picking up where we left off. I gushed to him about my love of water, and that I wanted to be on a sailboat, ideally making the sailboat my home. I remember him smiling at me, saying that he dreamed the same dream. I won the lottery the day I met him, and again the day we got married.

For the past 4 years, we’ve been scheming and dreaming together of traveling the world on a sailboat. Since we still don’t yet have a boat, we’ve satisfied ourselves by taking long road trips across Canada and the US, and we even lived in Guam for 5 months. But having been a mermaid in a past life, I am yearning for life at sea.

I always loved the water. My parents and I took a diving course together when I was sixteen, and I discovered the total zen feeling of being underwater, it felt like how it feels to fly in your dreams.

As a child, from 0-18, I spent every spring, summer and fall on my parents sailboat. You could say that I was born and raised to be a sailor.

My father taught me much about sailing, general boat maintenance and construction. When he decided to sell it, I started missing it. Bit by bit, over the years, I started noticing I was missing sailing more and more. In the last decade, that sense of missing out has turned into a deafening roar.

I started watching a lot of sailing vlogs on Youtube, to quench my thirst for adventure, but I always knew that simply watching wasn’t enough for me. In every aspect of my life, in all my passions, one common thread connects it all, my thirst for adventure and novel experiences.

These early sailing vlogs really inspired me to take my adventure into my own hands. I have had many careers over the years. I studied theatre in college, worked in the film industry (mostly behind the camera), and after that I transitioned to health, and have worked as a holistic therapist for the last decade. In theatre I could masquerade as a grand adventurer, film I could document the adventures of others, in therapy, I could embark upon discovering a new human, and help them along their path. And then I met Meghan, who encouraged me to take matters into my own hands.

I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, she had this sort of jazzy way about her, and we just clicked in every way imaginable.

On our first date, when she mentioned that she had a deep desire to go sailing, it was like the Universe had brought me the key to unlocking all the adventures that had merely existed in my dreams.

Together, we have started living our dreams. When we met, it was like everything accelerated. And now, we are hoping to join the ranks of the sailing vlogs that inspired us to get out there and explore.
